The best laptop you can get right now. (Summer 2015)

Laptops are great, think about this – having the power of a desktop on your lap, in your backpack is awesome, so it is really important that you get the right one. Unlike smartphones, there are just a few things to get right. A really good laptop has a solid build quality, a good battery life, a good screen, a good keyboard, a consistent operating system and the most important thing is a good trackpad.Y

You can either get one that runs Windows OS or Mac OS X, either way, you’re gonna be served well.

Let’s kick it off with Macs, the MacBook line-up has 3 devices- the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air and the MacBook. If you want a MacBook that is an absolute powerhouse – get the MacBook Pro. It has a gorgeous retina display with accurate colour reproduction, an Intel Core i processor, a high-end design and much more. If you are the type of the person who needs to edit photos and videos all the time, don’t look elsewhere, the MacBook Pro is a solid choice. Both the MacBook Pro’s measures about 1.8 cms thick and weighs around 4.5 pounds for the 15-inch and 3.5 pounds for the 13-inch, they are definitely on the heavier side.  But if you travel a lot, the 13-inch model would suit you just fine. The 15-inch laptop is too big, at least for my taste. With the new force touch trackpad, the already awesome trackpad of the MacBook has gotten even better. Apple knows what it does with its trackpads. The MacBook Pro with the 13-inch display starts at $1299 and can go upto $1799 and the 15-inch model starts at $1999 upto $2499.

The MacBook Air is the golden standard when it comes to ultrabooks. If you want something thin and light that can run with no compromises, get the MacBook Air. It measures 1.7 cms at its thickest and tapers down to 0.3 cms at its thinnest. The 11-inch MacBook Air just weighs around 2.3 pounds and the 13-inch models weighs around 3 pound. It has a high-end design, a good screen and a battery that could last forever. The 11-inch model lasts for 9 hours of usage on a single charge and the 13-inch model lasts 12 hours. It has an Intel Core i processor which you can use it for occasional video and photo editing, but you’ll end up waiting if you try to render a 4K video or do some heavy duty tasks, but still the MacBook Air is a solid choice. If you are planning to get the MacBook Air, I strongly recommend the 13-inch model. The 11-inch MacBook is just too small. Buying the 13-inch model you’ll appreciate the extra wrist space and the ability to insert an SD card with no need to plug in an adapter. The 11-inch MacBook Air starts at $899 upto $1099 and the 13-inch model starts at $999 upto $1199.The MacBook is the newest addition to the MacBook line-up. It is thinner and lighter than the MacBook Air. It has a higher resolution display than the MacBook Air but overall its not better than the MacBook Air. The problem is because its so thin and light, the processor is not that powerful. It has an Intel M processor, yes! it can handle everyday tasks like browsing the web or watching videos just fine but editing photos or videos is just a nightmare. You can use this laptop kinda like a netbook but it can never replace your primary computer. There’s one more thing that scares me, its the fact that it has only one USB Type-C port for power, connectivity and everything else. Apple says its the laptop for the future but the problem is we are nowhere near it. Because of the compromises it makes and the hefty price tag it comes in, its hard to recommend it over even the MacBook Air. But one thing is for sure, in the future every laptop is gonna look like this and processors that are powerful enough will fit into this tiny motherboard so that it can handle everything smoothly. Im still waiting for that day.

Let’s jump on to the Windows side of things, there are literally hundreds of companies that manufacture Windows machines but that doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is good. With tons of junk out there, it’s really hard to find a Windows machine that runs buttery smooth.

But there is one thing that stood out, it is the Dell XPS 2015. It was unveiled at CES 2015 and it is one of those laptops that makes your jaw drop when you look at it for the first time. It has an almost bezel-less display that measures 13-inches but fits into the body of the same size of a 11-inch MacBook Air. Dell calls it the infinity display, the display is gorgeous though. You can either buy one with a non-touch 1080P display or one with a QHD+ resolution, both ways you’ll be served well. The non-touch version costs $799 and goes upto $999 and the touch version start at $1299 upto $1599. The non-touch version weighs just 2.6 pounds while the touch version weighs 2.8 pounds. Its has a rugged build, a fast Intel Core i processor and a beautiful display. The keyboard flexes a little because of the carbon fibre its made of, but thats just a nit pick. The non-touch version lasts 9 hours and the touch version lasts 7, thats pretty good for a Windows laptop. If you don’t wanna get a Mac or if you are invested in the Windows ecosystem, the Dell XPS 13 is the best windows laptop available there.

The device in the second place isn’t a full fledged laptop but is almost close. It is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. The Surface Pro 3 is first of all a tablet until you connect with it the keyboard that costs an extra $130. Unlike the previous versions, the Surface Pro 3 feels mature and comfortable with or without the keyboard. Even though it’s a tablet that tries to be a laptop on the first hand, it doesn’t feel so and it runs a complete desktop OS with a processor that is so much more powerful. It has an Intel Core i processor to smoothen up things. If you want something that you can use as both a laptop and a tablet, the Surface Pro 3 is a solid choice. It has a 12-inch high resolution display, a solid build that makes it worth every penny you spend on it. It costs $799 for the base model upto $1949 plus $130 for the keyboard. But what if you don’t want much power and want it to cost less? Thats where Chromebooks come in

But what if you don’t want much power and want it to cost less? That’s where Chromebooks come in
You can buy a Chromebook, if you think you can live within a browser or if you are on a budget and don’t wanna spend hundreds of dollars on your laptop. A Chromebook does only one thing, it browses the web and its really important that you get the right one. Its really easy to buy a bad Chromebook because there are several bad Chromebooks available out there.

The best among them is the Toshiba Chromebook 2. It has a good 13-inch display and an Intel Celeron processor that is at least fast enough for everyday tasks. It is surprisingly good looking even though its made of plastic. It feels cheap but its thin body make it look more like a MacBook Air. It weighs less than 3 pounds and still lasts 8 hours on a single charge. It has a good keyboard and a trackpad and suprisngly very loud speakers. Meanwhile Chrome OS has come a long way and there are a lot of good things about it. It is pretty friendly to your pocket when it comes to pricing starting at just $299.

If you’re going to buy a laptop, you need not spend thousands of dollars on a device,  but its worth spend a little more to get the best one and the devices listed above are all that you should even look at. You could buy something from Hp, Acer or even the crazy high-end Chromebook by Google but none of them is worth it.
